What Is Citronella oil?

Citronella oil is a yellowish liquid derived from the Cymbopogon nardus grass, or citronella plant, which is a tall, tufted perennial that grows all over the world.[1,2,3]

What Does Citronella oil Do in Our products?

Citronella oil is known for its insect-repellent properties — it masks scents that are attractive to insects.[4] It also gives our products a fresh, natural scent. It is often found in candles, but it is also present in hair conditioner, moisturizer, sunscreen, lotion, and other items.[5]

Why Puracy Uses Citronella oil

We use citronella oil in several of our products as a fragrance. It is a better alternative to synthetic perfumes and phthalates. The FDA has deemed the ingredient generally recognized as safe (GRAS), and Whole Foods deems it acceptable in its body care and cleaning products.[8,9,10] In addition, citronella oil is on the EPA’s list of pesticides exempt from regulation under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act.[11] Oil of citronella derived from "Ceylon type" oil is a weak skin sensitizer, but citronella oil derived from "Java type" is a non-sensitizer.[12]

How Citronella oil Is Made

Producing citronella oil typically begins by cutting the Cymbopogon nardus grass then drying it for 24 hours. The grass is then placed in distillation machinery that pushes steam or water through the plant material. The oil and other components rise and are funneled into a condenser, which cools the vapor to liquid. The oil floats on the water, where it is siphoned off.[6,7]
