What Is Geranium oil?

Geranium oil, also known as rose geranium oil or geranyl tilgate, is derived from the leaves of the geranium plant pelargonium roseum, which is an ornamental plant that is indigenous to southern Africa but grows all over the world.[1,2,3]

What Does Geranium oil Do in Our products?

Geranium oil gives our products a fresh, natural scent. It is often found in facial moisturizer, makeup, shampoo, conditioner, and other items.[4,5]

Why Puracy Uses Geranium oil

We use geranium oil in several of our products as a fragrance. It is a better alternative to synthetic perfumes and phthalates. The FDA has deemed the ingredient generally recognized as safe (GRAS), and Whole Foods deems it acceptable in its body care and cleaning products.[8,9,10,11] In addition, geranium oil is on the EPA’s list of pesticides exempt from regulation under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act.[12] Research shows the ingredient helps suppress skin inflammation, edema, burns, and arthritis, and it is not a strong skin irritant or sensitizer.[13,14,15,16]

How Geranium oil Is Made

Geranium oil production typically begins by chopping up the leaves and stems of the plant. The mass is then placed in distillation machinery that pushes steam or water through the plant material. The oil and other components rise and are funneled into a condenser, which cools the vapor to liquid. The oil floats on the water, where it is siphoned off.[6,7]
