During the R&D process, we discovered plenty of variables that had to be considered:
- Every composition and type of water
- All dishwasher models, regardless of age and features
- All types of dishes (e.g. pots, pans, glasses, ceramic, silicone)
- How people rinse, wipe, and scrape dishes before loading dishes
- The way that dishes are stacked in the dishwasher
1. Use Only Natural Ingredients
To us, “natural ingredients” mean that our formulas are free of things like:
- Animal by-products
- Chlorine bleach
- Parabens
- Dyes
- Phthalates
- Fragrances and perfumes
- Phosphates
- Sulfates
2. Are Safe to Use Around Kids and Pets
A major impetus for creating our Natural Dishwasher Detergent came from a frightening incident that our co-founder, Sean Busch had with his own daughter.

Unfortunately, due to their bright colors and squishy texture, many young children assume detergent pods are edible. Too many accidental poisonings happen every year and Puracy refuses to be part of a completely avoidable statistic.

We began extensive testing on our initial polyvinyl disposable pod to ensure it would stay intact and provide a long shelf life. After a few weeks, we noticed that the formula caused microscopic holes in the outer layer.
After some minor adjustments from our manufacturer to increase durability (without requiring significant changes to the formula) the next round of lab tests were exactly what we were looking for: Our biodegradable polyvinyl alcohol is strong enough to contain our dishwashing powder but completely dissolves in the dishwasher.Puracy Eco-Friendly Dishwasher Detergent Hits the Market
Before selling any of our “first-generation” products, we always reach out to Puracy employees, their families, and friends to get real-world opinions. When we received an overwhelmingly positive response, we knew it was time to see what the public thought.
Within the first few days of introducing our dishwasher detergent packs on Amazon and Puracy.com, hundreds of orders were processed. To our dismay, the response wasn’t overwhelming: The most common complaint was streaking and residue left on glasses – especially in areas with hard water.

Our Second-Generation Formula
We acted quickly to pull the product, provide full refunds to any dissatisfied customers, and rework the formula. While our second-generation dishwasher packs earned slightly-better reviews, that still wasn’t good enough for our high standards. More work needed to be done.
Enlisting an Expert to Fine Tune the Formula
We were fortunate to connect with America’s foremost expert in dishwasher detergent formulation. With more than two decades of experience in developing high-quality formulas for many of the leading dishwashing producers, we laid out our goals, challenges, and requirements of using safe ingredients. After explaining that money was no object, he remarked that it was the first time a company had provided an unlimited budget to create the perfect product.
We needed to explore every available ingredient to find the right balance of cleansing power, rinsing ability, and natural scent. We weren’t looking for a great eco-friendly dishwasher pod: We wanted to produce the best natural dishwasher pod on the market.Introducing Our 3rd Generation Formula
After working for two months straight, the expert formula was sent back to headquarters for testing. Not only did we send pods to employees, friends, and family members, but for the first time in company history, we also sent samples to the two dozen customers who gave our earliest formulas one-star reviews.
